The magic of the curator revitalize the galleries with art: Kelly Lindner

On March 18th, there was a special guest speaker lecture called “How'd You Get to Be a Curator Anyway?” by Kelly Lindner hosted by Elaine O’Brien and ART 112 Class via zoom meeting.

Who is Kelly Lindner?

Kelly Lindner is the Galleries and Collections Curator at Sacramento State University as a recent addition to the art department and university galleries. Prior to CSUS, Lindner worked with CSU Chico from 2014 to 2019, and through the years as director and curator.  During her tenure at Chico State, Lindner endorsed and arranged solo and group exhibitions for many artists to express their work choice. Her enduring support pushes the drive of learning about the background information and fill in the exhibit and object with the history that is lost and unspoken. The latest project she and the library galleries launches last year called, “Hello Stranger” in response to the time of social isolation.

                                                                                           Untitled by Aida Lizalde. 2020

An example of the curator’s work is the University Galleries website. The site is formatted of a couple of galleries with a brief description. Platform series is an example of an event providing an artist talk and lecture. Previously an artist, Shaun Leonardo provides a lecture about diversion, trauma, and criminality. Leonardo creates a cohesive narrative with an assembly community to participate in various exercises and produce pieces that are relevant to their lives. The lecture encourages and gives inspiration to many rising artists to create anecdote that tells a story and the process that is in the art.

A question, I want to ask, During the pandemic, was the change from transitioning in-person to online gallery loses the charm of dialogue the artist relationship? How's the arrangement of setting up exhibits work into the online website?

                                                                “Think outside the box…”

The perspective of Lindner’s curator experience is a whole new level of work that makes a gallery’s essence different than others. The role itself lead the competition of the gallery in terms of the position. The term, “Place” explores the idea of how do you want to represent the community. One of the examples in the Chico gallery, where Lindner task an idea about their first impression of the process in visiting Chico State. One of the installations is an almond machine shaker that symbolizes agriculture in a small vibrant environment in Chico. The scenery builds the experience behind the scene. Another point is to present a bigger view on art that affects the audience in the depth of the environment art. Lindner has worked with an artist that is a tribe member that focuses on making an installation that voices what was lost of the traditional land and indigenous space. The purpose is to engage with history to view a different way and language that is unrecognized. The curator’s main task to create a catalyst of the artist’s history and doesn’t always have to be heavily on the museum. The gallery should match the artist’s space that can tell a story. The strength of being a curator is building a relationship with the artist’s interest. The collaboration helps dialogue and give artist guidance to engage in the gallery to showcase to the audience.
