The Animated Sketches comes into Motion: Dave Thomas
The animation works behind the iconic Nickelodeon's show, TUFF Puppy and The Fairly Oddparents is the one and only Dave Thomas. He is a Californian native that grew up liking cartoon and gravities his interests in storyboarding when he was fortunate to listen to Joe Ranft at his school at the time. His past job life seems to be genuine and nostalgic in his perspective. With the interactive pen and touch screen tablet, Dave can wield at his best and his abilities to make animation and storyboarding.
From reading his interview with Animation Insider, storying boarding is truly, "so goddam hard" from working in the field of animation for over twenty years. The schedule that Dave works in is very flexible and different every day as there is no real routine. However, from a good artist, he is a father of two sons which becomes a balancing scale of how important his kids to him and acknowledge professional living the two-act of a career and family.
Dave's past work, "My Fair Hatey" showcases the works of storyboarding in process. From his work, there are humorous elements in his animation and captivating mild tensity, use of color, and action sequence. The process in making sequence was animated with movement that is timed with the music than the emphasis on visual drawings alone. The best part of storyboarding is the learning aspect. What can this scene stacked up to or layer to put on for a panel? There will be challenges and changes along the way to adapt and improvise at the spot.
His advice for the future artist is to be humble, don't be discourage by said talents because experience is all we need to pour in to be better. Practice always makes perfect and asks for help when needed and they will return the favor. I have a new respect for animators and artists who are striving for their careers and hard-working at their careers. It is a blessing to see their growth and improvement. I grew up watching Fairy OddParents that spurs of imagination and amusement. I first one of the illustrators, Butch Hartman, and now learn about Dave Thompson. It is an honor to attend an artist talk lecture about his career in animation later today.
